It's not every day a sports team leaves its original arena. It's even less often a fan gets to attend the last home opener in that storied place. And ever rarer for that fan to get to sing the National Anthem at that last home opener.
I wasn't always an Islanders fan. I grew up a Hartford Whalers fan, true to my Connecticut roots, but for the last almost 10 years now, I have become a loyal and loving fan of the Isles, and they have been pretty good to me too. On October 11, 2014, I got the opportunity to sing the National Anthem at the last Islanders home opener at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, an evening I won't soon forget. The barn was almost as loud as the playoffs two years ago, and the Isles haven't looked back since, staying in first place for the first time in, well, a long time.
I am so thrilled to have been a part of such a special night for what is proving to be one very special team. While I'll be singing a lot more anthems this season (and hopefully in the playoffs as well!), this anthem will stay particularly close to my heart.
Look for the video soon, and let's go Islanders!
